I fully agree with your first sentence:

The case study that comes to mind (and I am sure you are fully familiar with ) is Dennis Brown.

That the opportunity to "grow" presented itself--but he was surrounded by those who thought he should stick to his ideals and beliefs.

You know the end of the story.

Can't forget how you puffed and fumed when i suggested that Tanya Stevens should (maybe) branch out into Jazz. That i find her vocal range has lots of potential.

Lawks yu naily kill mi. Bet you don't remembah.

Wrong case D Brown was signed to A&M records. Check it out and check out the sound he produced then. Sorry but they didn't know how to market him.

Also Dennis Brown did one important thing and that was form two record labels. One was Yvonne Special which was controlled by his wife and one for himself and did a good amount of tunes on them so his kids will always get some royalties.

Why Estelle, Alicia keys, Janet Jackson and Beyoncé don't branch out more into reggae? Reggae may need a great white hope to champion its cause. I nominate Taylor Swift.

Extremely strong overreaching, he merely tapped in on a groundswell, to even suggest that he was responsible for even the slightest value add is ridiculous. Right place, right time, groundswell was already there. exodus was on the British charts for fifty six straight weeks with probably very little formal marketing. If I remember correctly when Bob died he had already sold in excess of 5-10 million albums combined so how can anyone say they added value to a product with a message that sold millions and the singer died at thirty six, the combination of marley, rasta, message, jamaica, dying young, weed is the real reason, if there was no Legend album it would have been something else and some idiot out there who produced a compilation album would be saying the same thing this guy is claiming.

Legend was not bought because of a slick marketing campaign, it was bought because of the enduring message of marley and was a sort of one stop/ shop for people who were sort of interested in a Marley. A best of Marley album put together well would provably have done similarly well.

I agree, Stoni. And I am almost certain they said only a limited number was to be produced so there was a rush on for them. Of course, it seems like the production was actually endless and I think you can still but them today. Now, that was the big marketing ploy!

Wonder why Myrna Hague and John jones never signed big contract.

"She moved to Sweden, where she signed a record deal with Warner Music Sweden and recorded the 2001 pop album Sintoxicated."
