Continued decline in teens’ use of alcohol and cigarettes suggests regulating marijuana could be more effective at preventing teen use than current prohibition policies

WASHINGTON, D.C. — A biennial federal government survey released Thursday dispels the myth that rolling back marijuana prohibition laws will lead to an increase in teen marijuana use.

The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s (CDC) High School Youth Risk Behavior Survey (YRBS) found the rate of current marijuana use among U.S. high school students remained flat from 2011 to 2013.

During that period of time, voters in Colorado and Washington adopted and implemented laws making marijuana legal for adults; state legislatures in Rhode Island and Vermont approved and implemented laws decriminalizing possession of small amounts of marijuana; and national polls showed significant increases in public support for ending marijuana prohibition.

As marijuana's national popularity continues to grow and more states have legalized either medical or recreational use of it, a new federal survey shows that those shifting attitudes have not produced a surge in teen use.

The biennial High School Youth Risk Behavior Surveillance System survey from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention revealed that the rate of marijuana use among U.S. high school students remained virtually unchanged from 2011 to 2013. It's also about 3 percent less than the peak of teen marijuana use in 1999, when nearly 27 percent of teens said they had recently used marijuana, according to the CDC data.

In 2013, 23.4 percent of American high-school-aged teens used marijuana one or more times in the 30 days before the survey, the data show. That's nearly even with 23.1 percent in 2011.

When Colorado legalized recreational marijuana, critics of the idea warned it would lead to more crime throughout the state. But the impact has been just the opposite so far in the state’s largest city, which has seen violent crime go down.

Crime data for Denver, the hub of legal pot sales in the state, shows murders, assaults, rapes, burglaries and other violent crimes declined during the first three months of the year, compared with the same period for 2013.

Homicides went down from 17 to 8 (a 53% drop), automobile break-ins from 2,317 to 1,477 (down 36%) and sexual assaults from 110 to 95 (down 14%). Overall, violent and property crimes dropped more than 10% from last year to this year during the first quarter.

So far we havent seen the increase in use, the increase in psychosis, the increase in addiction, the increase in crime, in the states but we expect it in Jamaica.

What so special about our genes, am I to believe Jamaicans use it more than the americans or anyone else in the world i.e Panamanians and C. Ricans ?...so this would question the zombie theory , we should have elevated levels in all the categories in the above , the only thing we would probably out do the yanks in is crime, and that has a direct link to unemployment and poverty CC Panama and C. Rica , both have a cultural use of ganja like Jamaicans, incidentally we played a major role in exporting that culture.

Decriminalisation Of Ganja Could Cause More Health Problems, MAJ Warns

          Published: Saturday June 14, 2014 | 8:45 am0 Comments

The Medical Association of Jamaica (MAJ) says the decriminalisation of ganja for personal use will cause more mental and physical health problems for Jamaicans, especially the youth.

It says it hopes that Cabinet will reconsider its position in line with health practice and science.

The MAJ says while Jamaica could benefit from the potential profits to be earned from a well conceived and efficient industry, additional investment in medical research is necessary.
