Bill approved to relax ganja possession penalties

JAMAICA'S legislators have approved the amendment of the Dangerous Drugs Act to facilitate the decriminalisation of possession of small amounts of ganja.

The announcement was made by Justice Minister Mark Golding during a press conference at the Office of the Prime Minister in Kingston yesterday.

NOTE:

Jamaica cannot enforce the simple traffic law of speeding; there is no way that what I have just read about "small quantity" of weed can be enforced.

The collection of money for > 2.0 ozs. will go straight into the police officers pocket. (I guess each officer will be issued a scale to weight the weed ).

Are they enforcing it now under the criminalization laws ? The massive amount of youths that pass through half way tree court house , is a drop in the bucket of those that consume weed in our cultural scale, the enforcement cost is ridiculous , that includes , police, court, food and shelter, plus the corruption cost to do what you mention, accept bribes and deal in it CC: Sandokhan and most of all the cost in lives and livelyhood again CC: Sandokhan.

The question is, the cost of decriminalization or criminalization worth it , lucid minds would say decriminalization mek sense, in case yuh nuh ear, di war on ganja is over.

Jokas would argue prioritization, lets see , Sargie Brown chasing ganja smokers or bogged down in ganja paper work as opposed to hunting gun totting criminals,white/blue collar criminals.In other words chasing youths who smoke a joint to those that rob, rape and murder because sergent brown too busy a beat up di ganja man.

That saved criminalization resoursce put into education and health care, talk about prioritization and yes the little tax money from it.

Possession of small quantities of the drug would become a non-arrestable, ticketable infraction in Jamaica resulting in a fine, Golding said.

"Too many of our young people have ended up with criminal convictions after being caught with a 'spliff,' something that has affected their ability to do things like get jobs and get visas to travel overseas," Golding said.

KINGSTON, Jamaica – At least one church leader has voiced approval of government’s decision to put in motion the decriminalisation of possession of small amounts of ganja.
General Secretary of the Jamaica Baptist Union, Karl Johnson Friday welcomed the government’s move to relax penalties for possession of the weed.

“Too many of our young people have had their future blighted just for a little (ganja). Truth be told many of us today would have our lofty careers stymied and if you look at it, it’s really only affixed with a certain socio-economic class,” Johnson told OBSERVER ONLINE.
