Texas cop shoots 93-year-old woman to death while responding to 911 call
The Hearne Police Department officer killed elderly woman known to neighbors as 'Miss Sully' while responding to emergency call about a female waving a gun. Witnesses say the policeman fired five times at Pearlie Golden.
Pearlie Golden (right), 93, was shot and killed by Hearne police officer Stephen Stem while he was responding to an emergency call about a female waving a gun. A 93-year-old woman wielding a revolver was shot to death by police in the rural Texas town of Hearne, authorities said.
Neighbors said Pearlie Golden was a sweet woman known to most people of this predominantly black community as "Miss Sully."
The nonagenarian was shot five times, several witnesses told KBTX-TV.
The fatal confrontation began when Golden’s nephew called cops after he took the elderly woman’s car keys because she no longer has a driver’s license.
Robertson County News Officer Stephen Stem fired a shot to wound Golden, who later died.
She grabbed a gun and threatened her nephew, KBTX-TV reported. When cops arrived around 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, Golden was outside the home waving the gun around.
A one-paragraph press release issued by the department Wednesday said officers responded to a 911 call involving "a female with a gun."
Officer Stephen Stem asked the 93-year-old to “put down the weapon and then ultimately fired his own sidearm, wounding Miss Golden” who later died at a local hospital, according to the Robertson County District Attorney’s Office.

Officer Stem has been suspended with pay, a news release from police said said. The town of less than 5,000 people is about 150 miles south of Dallas.
"While it is too early in the investigation to comment on any of the facts or evidence ... I can say that this was a very tragic occurrence," District Attorney Coty Siegert said. "My prayers go out to the family members of Miss Golden and to the Hearne community as a whole."
Resident Lawanda Cooke questioned why the officer would shoot an old woman.
