Leading Offences That Landed Jamaicans In Prison Last Year

    Published: Monday April 21, 2014 | 12:36 pm1 Comment

Larceny, breaches of the Dangerous Drugs Act and wounding were the leading offences that landed adult Jamaicans in prison in 2013.

Data contained in the 2013 Economic and Social Survey indicated that a total of 1,975 persons were admitted to correctional facilities last year.

The figures show that men accounted for 93.1 per cent of those incarcerated.

It was also highlighted that the majority of the adults incarcerated last year were first-timers, under the age of 31 and were unskilled.

It would be good if we had a breakdown of the data as per ,
    *types of larceny,
*where and types of drug offences
    * employment status
    * Was there an issue of police abuse

Mo this is how you tackle social/human rights issues. How much of these arrest led to police physically abusing/killing citizens in certain area or demographics...DATA ?

"It therefore is useless and pointless, unless it is for share malice and victimisation to arrest and charge a 92-year-old man for such a simple offence. There is nothing morally wrong with this man smoking a spliff; the only thing wrong is that it is still on the law books," said Chevannes.

Its not for the police ,its for human rights, social rights activist to disseminate the data, when the ACLU filed suit against the NYPD for stop and frisk you think they asked the NYPD to become sociologist ? ...they gathered data that was there e.g if you stopping blacks/hispanics in bedstuy for ganja posssesion and giving them jail time ,yet whites in brighton beach are stopped just as much and not given any jail time its a documented rights issue for orgs to do something about it.

Our orgs havent a clue how to go about it,its a great tool to use to change social policy.

Ohh Jawge yuh a maths man, suh check yuh sociologist brethren dem.

That’s only because the clearing up rate for murders is surely among the worst on the planet (only about 32 percent of murders result in arrests and conviction annually).

It’s even much worse in the case of rapes!

                Half of the Story

The retired cop is being a bit euphemistic in his comments on the cops.

But above the extremely high murder rate are the unrelenting and countless incidents of rape. And we’re not talking now about just the garrison communities; we are talking about Jamaica as a whole.

So, don’t be fooled by the ganja smokers in prison. They are there only because it is extremely easy to spot then and get them there – just spot someone smoking a weed.

@ X,You would be surprised at some of the people that are criminals (it's easy for some to falsify documents without fear of being caught) The paradox is that some hard working Jakans can't believe that some of these things are happening in Ja. Ja a land of sub cultures.
