  • Untruths hurt Alpha

"They feel rejected, their pain is great," Sister Marie Chin, area administrator for the Sisters of Mercy, said in reference to the boys in a discussion with the Jamaica Observer yesterday.

She said that since the "irresponsible" announcement last week, the boys are being labelled as homosexuals, a branded Alpha Boys' Home bus was stoned, people have been yelling at the driver, and teachers at the school have been confronted by individuals on the streets.

Sister Marie reiterated that cost was a major factor in the nuns' decision and confirmed information relayed to the Observer that Alpha was being granted a quarter of the funds allocated to Government-run orphanages monthly, despite repeated pleas by the nuns to be brought on par

"It therefore is useless and pointless, unless it is for share malice and victimisation to arrest and charge a 92-year-old man for such a simple offence. There is nothing morally wrong with this man smoking a spliff; the only thing wrong is that it is still on the law books," said Chevannes.

Musicians, politicians could've plugged Alpha budget

    THE EDITOR, Sir:

Nice, touchy-feely, nostalgic piece ('A crying shame! Old boys devastated by planned closure of dorm facilities at Alpha') published in The Sunday Gleaner of April 13, 2014, except you utterly omitted the WHY of the institution closing.

Why? Because the current pack of jackals we call 'Government' allowed it to happen, a consequence of decades and current IMF ginnalship and government bandooloo!
Just because Lisa Hanna was a beauty queen should not cause you to omit the fact that her party, The People's National Party, on her watch, CUT THE BUDGET of a proud, 135-year-old 'people's' tradition!

The half truths,if you go to the hospital then you come across people that are sick,we know there has been an escalation of street boys being abused by perverted adults,no wonder an institution addressing the plights of....are forced to confront...
That instution did not create the problem.

I suspect the Govt has a gripe with not having a say in the goings on of an institution that relies heavily on its fundings.
It is her(Lisa's) portfolio,it will be interesting to see how this development is factored in her annual progress report.

I saw Lisa's interview on Impact with Cliff Hughs and I was surprised at the backlash from the nuns. Its seems to me Lisa painted a different picture and tried to implied that the school made the decision to pull the plug and not that the government cut the support. If so poor interviewing by cliff and disingenuous by Lisa. Very disingenuous.

                  KINGSTON, Jamaica:
Youth minister, Lisa Hanna is standing by her statements on the reasons the Alpha Boys' School will no longer offer residential care following a rebuttal by the administrators of the facility.

At a press conference on April 8, Hanna said the Sisters of Mercy had decided to stop offering residential care and that they cited grave anti-social behaviour of children in the care system as their main reason for doing so.

Just feel that the issue is about priority, the she say thing takes undue precedence...
It is the opinion of the JCF that youngsters are being used as foot soldiers by criminal elements, just like in hospital you find the sick, you find boys at risk in homes like Alpha.
This is indeed her portfolio,it is her obligation to rectify....
Is it prioritized by Cabinet? Are there signs that she is making sure it is?
The police have no qualms dealing with the youngsters on the street,if the sexual deviants in Aloga are...,then it is a police issue.
