PM Simpson Miller heads to Venezuela for Chávez memorial

2006 file: Hugo Chávez poses with Prime Minister Portia Simpson Miller after signing an agreement in Montego Bay, St James.

Prime Minister Portia Simpson Miller left the island this morning on a one day visit to Venezuela, to participate in ceremonies to commemorate the first anniversary of the death of the former Venezuelan President Hugo Chávez.

The events will include a military parade, a religious service and a cultural programme.

A release from the Office of the Prime minister says the importance of the bilateral relations between Jamaica and the Bolivarian Republic includes the initiative taken in 2005 by the late President Chávez in launching the PetroCaribe facility, an important provision of which is that loans under the facility can be repaid by way of the export of Jamaican goods and services.

The first step in this direction was taken last December when an initial shipment of clinker produced by our local cement company was shipped from Rockfort to Caracas.

Simpson Miller is accompanied on the visit by the Minister of Foreign Affairs and A.J. Nicholson.

While off the island, Minister of Finance and Planning, Dr Peter Phillips, will be in charge of the Government.

Simpson Miller returns to the island this evening.
