China and Jamaica to conclude Harmony Cove development talks

    Tuesday, February 11, 2014

KINGSTON, Jamaica — A delegation from Sinohydro Corporation Limited in China, will visit Kingston later this month, to conclude negotiations for the financing and equity investment of the Harmony Cove Development project.

Minister of Finance and Planning, Dr Peter Phillips, made the announcement during the sitting of the House of Representatives on Tuesday (February 11) as he gave an update on his visit to China in December 2013.

Dr Phillips’ visit to China came against the background of an earlier visit to the Asian country by a delegation, headed by Prime Minister, Portia Simpson Miller, in August 2013. *

“The Government of Jamaica indicated to the parties involved in the transaction that the Government was not prepared to wait beyond this year for the conclusion of arrangements with potential Chinese partners,” Dr Phillips told the House.

Harmony Cove is a 2,300-acre property on the Jamaican north coast, located 23 miles east of Montego Bay, St James, and 44 miles west of Ocho Rios, St Ann.*

Government’s intention is to develop the property into a resort to include several world class golf courses, a luxury spa, marina facilities, commercial developments, luxury hotels, private residencies, a hotel, casino, convention and entertainment centres, restaurants and retail assets.

Seriously, I have some major concerns about these projects spearheaded by the Chinese. Jamaican workers at all levels are being shafted! The Chinese have a poor record of employing Jamaicans and Portia needs to do something about that!

that is why we can cuss the Jamaican entrepreneurs all want but them stand a better chance of employing Jamaicans. Make our economy more attractive for Jamaicans to invest. Give them the same tax break you give to the Chinese and the Spanish hotels.

Just heard that even supervisor level at a Spanish hotel was demonstrating as they were losing their jobs. The hotel said they want Bi-lingual workers and them can't get that.

Yuh serious, Sass? So who's fault is that? Anyone considering a career in tourism must consider learning another language. Down to a simple waiter! And if yuh lose yuh job because yuh not bilingual, then mala suerte to you!

Mo, I am the one who always say Tourism must be taught in schools. That includes language but that maybe the simple excuse. I have experience in hotel where management want outsiders in the departments because they are afraid of theft, and bandoloism amongst Jamaicans for good reason, but some are just bias and will use anything to bring in Cheaper, non unionized workers and their own.

All I am saying is we must be prepared and we stand a better chance of employing our people if we grow our businesses. Not thing less, nothing more.

That is an issue Holness/JLP could champion Jamaican workers rights and ecosystem issues, instead this plane fare B.S.

I have deep reservations against the chinese.
