Dear Editor: I commend Justice Minister.Golding for introducing legislation to legalize marijuana. Legalizing pot is an issue of racial justice-garrisonisation, fiscal responsibility and common sense.

In 2010, cops in Jamaica busted someone for having marijuana every 28 minutes, a report released last June by the Jamaicans For Justice shows, Most of these arrests are happening in communities of garrisonisation. Despite roughly comparable usage rates, Citizens who reside in the garrisons are 6 times likely more than the middle class to be arrested for marijuana possession.

These social disparities are particularly bad in Tivoli Gardens . Although those arrested for a first possession of less than an ounce pay a fine rather than serve time in Upper St Andrew , in 2010 Tivoli Gardens had the highest rate of social disparity for possession arrests in the state, compared to other counties with said number of citizens. At this same time it had the highest number of cases of alleged police brutality resulting in death. This was at the time of Mr Cooke apprehension for extradiction. These numbers while decreasing have remained with disparity.

And citizens in Tivoli Gardens are more than six times likely to be arrested for marijuana offense — even though they constitute only 5 percent of Kingstons population.

Dear Editor: I commend Rep. Melissa Sargent for introducing legislation to legalize marijuana. Legalizing pot is an issue of racial justice, fiscal responsibility and common sense.

In 2010, cops in Wisconsin busted someone for having marijuana every 28 minutes, a report released last June by the American Civil Liberties Union shows. Most of these arrests are happening in communities of color. Despite roughly comparable usage rates, African-Americans in Wisconsin are nearly six times more likely than whites to be arrested for marijuana possession.

These racial disparities are particularly bad in Dane County. Although those arrested for a first possession of less than an ounce pay a fine rather than serve time in Dane County, in 2010 Dane had the highest rate of racial disparity for possession arrests in the state, compared to other counties with more than 300,000 residents.

And African-Americans in Dane County are more than six times more likely than whites to be arrested for the same offense — even though they constitute only 5 percent of Dane’s populatio

"It therefore is useless and pointless, unless it is for share malice and victimisation to arrest and charge a 92-year-old man for such a simple offence. There is nothing morally wrong with this man smoking a spliff; the only thing wrong is that it is still on the law books," said Chevannes.

KINGSTON, Jamaica -- A large group of residents Monday morning staged a protest in front of the Darling Street Police Station, downtown Kingston.

The residents say they are angry over the death of a resident from Tivoli Gardens, identified as Oshane Dotlin, at the police station over the weekend.

"Them (police) arrest the youth Saturday for a spliff (ganja cigarette) and today we come hear say him dead, police a say him hang himself, lie them a tell!" a woman angrily declared.

Solve the ganja criminalisation problem and you take a huge step in solving most of the police brutality problems, you make a dent in the crime problem, the garrisonisation problem.

For a ganja spliff ?....said it already the greatest human rights abuse post slavery and it has been totally ignored by human rights organisations in Jamaica.

Step up JFJ ,where much is asked to whom much is given. You asked to deal with police brutality, well you have it.
