Today, the Outlook magazine shares 10 things previously not known about the pioneering Myrtle Dwyer.
    1. She hails from the small community of New Works in eastern Westmoreland and is the last child for Dudley and Lauretta Dwyer, who ensured that all their children attended infant and primary school daily. Sunday school was a must. She is the proud mother of one child, Rachel Anderson.
    2. She has been chairman of the board of her alma mater Montego Bay High since 2001. She is the first female and past student to hold this position. Past holders of this position were ministers of religion.
3.She has been a deacon and lay preacher at the Calvary Baptist Church for more than 10 years. She believes firmly in praying for the country's political leaders whether it is 'green' or 'orange'.
4.She has been in tourism for four decades as a trained hotelier, and is now in her own business of destination management, being a pioneer in this field in Jamaica. The research continues to promote the importance of such entities in tourism.
    5. She studied hotel and tourism management in Germany and speaks German fluently. She attributes much of the discipline to work at any level, though menial, to the grounding she received in that country.
    6. She has been Honorary Consular Agent of Spain - Montego Bay for over 15 years and was honoured by the king of Spain in July 2007 with the Commander of the Order of Civil Merit of My Kingdom.
    7. Has been a justice of the peace of St James for over 20 years and enjoys working with and in the community. She is also a lay magistrate.
    8. Believes we fail our children and young when we fail to properly impress upon them the importance of their education.
    9. Has met many challenges throughout her life, but is convinced that she is "the only person who can stand in her own way or limit herself".
    10. Believes strongly in engaging young minds of the nation to strive for excellence through hard work and dedication.
