    Md. officer shot son after seeing him stab his mother

    Sgt. James Stirkens said he had to shoot his son to stop the stabbing attack on his wife.

    GAITHERSBURG, Md -- Police say an off-duty police officer shot and killed his son Wednesday after the 25-year-old stabbed his mother in their home.

    Sgt. James Stirkens, a 27-year veteran of the Montgomery County Police Department, tells investigators he had to shoot his son to stop him from continuing to stab his wife. The son has been identified as Christopher Stirkens.

    Police say James Stirkens was inside the house, off duty, when heard noises and found his son stabbing his mother, 53-year-old Denise Stirkens.

    "There was some type of domestic dispute. The officer observed his son attacking his wife with some type of sharp instrument. Observed some type of stabbing motion. In an effort to stop this attack, the officer discharged his handgun and shot his son," says Capt. Jim Daly with Montgomery County Police.

    Police say James Stirkens called 911 and stayed on the line while trying to save his wife. Denise Stirkens was taken to the hospital, where she died from her stab wounds

      This great nation needs to do alot more about mental illness.Third world nations have the excuse of blaming obeah drugs or ganja .America doesnt have that luxury.

        You see 60 minutes last week? A state senator from VA survived a stabbing from his son, who then killed himself. He son had written a dairy where he believed killing his father would send him to heaven. Mental illness continues to be ignored at our peril.

          Most of these mass killings are linked to mental illness,the black lady in DC that was killed ,trying to drive in the whitehouse with child in the back seat,same thing.
