    The Ports
The expansion of the Panama Canal due for completion in 2015 will change the dynamics of shipping in the western hemisphere. 12,500 TEU ships will bring goods from the Far East destined for the eastern seaboard of the United States and Canada through the canal to the Caribbean. They will then be shipped to North America, replacing the existing sea-land route through western US ports.

    The Port of Kingston

The Port of Kingston will be ready to offload and re-consolidate these shipments according to their final destination.

Dredging of Kingston Harbour to a depth of 15m will accommodate 12,500 TEU container ships and the capacity of Kingston Container Terminal will be expanded to allow for more storage area. The Port is within easy connecting distance to the Norman Manley International Airport on the other shore of Kingston Harbour.

    Bulk Shipment Port

Cow Bay in St. Thomas, less than 20km from Kingston Harbour, is one of the deepest natural harbours in the Caribbean. This will be a bulk shipment port for the storage and transfer of bulk It will provide crude oil and petroleum product tankage, together with blending, natural deep water loading, discharging and transshipment capabilities. This could guarantee uninterrupted supplies of crude oil, gas and refined products to the global market. Other planned terminals will cater to bulk minerals, grain and other commodities, enhancing Jamaica’s food and energy security.

    Dry Dock

On the south coast, to the west of Kingston Harbour a dry dock facility will be established to offer maintenance and repair service to ships in the Caribbean.

    Air Cargo
Jamaica’s two international airports now handle air cargo in addition to passenger loads, but the Logistics Hub will require additional air cargo capacity and a runway with the ability to accept long-haul aircraft. Such a facility will increase the ability to handle long-haul and time-sensitive cargo.

Norman Manley International Airport Situated on the Palisadoes peninsula bordering the picturesque Kingston Harbour, NMIA is a twenty minute drive from downtown Kingston and the Port. This airport serves Kingston, eastern and central Jamaica.

The 2,713m x 48m will be lengthened by 500m to extend take-off run and install Runway End Safety Areas (RESA).

The Cargo and Logistics Centre has a capacity of 3,716m2 which is fully occupied
NMIA cargo facility has a 3,278m2 capacity
An additional 1115m2 of cargo space will be available by the end of 2013 with an equal area being available for near term expansion
14,000 m2 of land space is available for cargo storage: BOOT development is planned
Ministry of Agriculture screening and USDA pre-screening facilities are located on site

    Sangster International Airport (SIA)
Sangster International Airport (SIA) in north west Jamaica serves western Jamaica. This airport
has one runway with an overall length of 2653m and a width of 46m. The runway surface type is asphalt concrete and is capable of accommodating a B747size aircraft, with reach to parts of Europe and most of North, South and Central America.

SIA handled 40,300 movements in 2012
The runway will be lengthened to facilitate longer take-off runs and installation of RESA
42% of the airlines now using SIA handle cargo
MBJ Airports Ltd plans to develop cargo as part of its growth strategy

Vernamfield: Air Cargo Hub of the Future

The Vernamfield airfield is situated on 1,174 hectares of land in the parish of Clarendon in central Jamaica. Only 5km south of the major east-west Highway 2000 and 15km from Jamaica’s south coast, this site has the advantage that it is not vulnerable to tsunamis and has land space to construct terminal and warehouse buildings and a runway in excess of 3km to accommodate landing of a fully-loaded A380 aircraft.

    Air Cargo/Logistics Site
A commercial free zone will facilitate multi-modal transport links, connecting with the ports through road and rail links
Furnished with state-of-the-art equipment it will be ideal for the international courier and internet marketing industries

    Aircraft Maintenance and Repair (MRO)
The complex will provide maintenance services for aircraft using Jamaica’s airports as well as those using other regional airports

    Aviation Training Centre
Regional aviation training will be provided for specialized industry areas
The Caribbean Aerospace College, a joint venture with Surrey Paving and Aggregates and the Air Transport Technical College of Singapore, now operating at Tinson Pen, will be relocated to Vernamfield. The College will graduate its first batch of students in June 2013

    Assets in the KMR:

    Norman Manley Airport, KCT

2 Existing Assets that are being improved. KCT Port to be dredged and divested to Dubai or Singapore or Shipping Consortium

There are 10,000 Acres of Land available within 10 minutes of Port.

Convenient proximity to massive labour force (Kingston, Portmore and St. Catherine) to facilitate Logistics and other Industrial Operations.

You do remember that our industrial base was decimated in the 90's..and our services industry is a joke.. we have an underutilized population in the KMR..

    Critical Thinking dictates the obvious..

Now.. back to your quixotic and profound yapping...

LOL ... disingenuous once more. Yuh psychosis is apparent

The KMR assets are universally acknowledged as PART of a Global Hub solution

The KMR however is completely UNABLE to host a Global Hubby by itself because of its severe spatial limitations...consequently hub operations are spread ISLANDWIDE.... but do NOT include the significant CHEC project in the Old Harbour/HWY2K zones

Case closed ... Book 'em DI...woooiiiee mi 5-O!!

It is the Center Piece to any aspiration to become the 4th Global Hub..

It can certainly be a Logistics Hub to compete with other efforts in the Region.. and transform the economy.. you don't have to be 4th Global Hub to transform this economy...

What is required to become a Global Logistics Hub ?

That is what would inform the answer to that question...

Singapore is one.. they are the size of St. James..

So Ben... are you saying the KMR can host the proposed Global Logistics Hub??? Or do you have your own design for a global hub??

Are the Termites crazy for locating space far and wide when their logistics hub can fit in the KMR?? ie.... a Bulk Commodity Port & tank farms etc covering 1000+ acres, Dry Dock for 200,000+ ton freighters, international cargo airport with a 4 mile runway and assembly & MRO yards covering 5000+ acres and 16 SEZs with thousands more in acreage

Dem Termite nuh ave nuh sense... KMR big enuff...nuh choo??

Not substantive to tge ongoing HUB discussion...
But you did mention Singapore hence openibg the door...
For the purpose of argument consider the following true.
1)There is a secession and the seceding parish is St James.
2)That state has its own currency.
3)It offers atypica tax incentives which lure the filthy rich people and businesses of Jamaica.
Would St James success be at the expense of Jamaica, and if another secession occurs, and that new State offers a better tax incentive, would that be to the detriment of St James?
