Guards, staff committed nearly half of sexual assaults in prisons: report
Nearly half of all sexual assaults reported in U.S. Correctional facilities in 2011 were committed by prison guards or staff, according to a report released Thursday by the Bureau of Justice Statistics.
Of the staff perpetrators, 78 percent were fired or resigned, and nearly half were arrested, prosecuted, or convicted.
Since 2009, reported allegations of sexual victimization has risen 12 percent in correctional facilities; however substantiated reports have remained stable. The report’s findings are based on annual surveys of adult prison systems, public and private jails, private prisons, jails in Indian country and facilities operated by the U.S. military and Immigration and Customs Enforcement.
