Obscene wealth: World’s 85 richest have same wealth as 3.5 billion poorest – Oxfam

The world’s 85 wealthiest people have as much money as the 3.5 billion poorest people on the planet – half the Earth’s population. That’s according to Oxfam’s latest report on the risks of the widening gap between the super-rich and the poor.

The report, titled “Working for the Few,” was released Monday, and was compiled by Oxfam – an international organization looking for solutions against poverty and injustice.

The document focuses on the extent of global economic inequality caused by rapidly increasing wealth of the richest people that poses the threat to the “human progress.”

A total of 210 people became billionaires last year, joining the existing 1,426 billionaires with a combined net worth of $5.4 trillion.

"Instead of moving forward together, people are increasingly separated by economic and political power, inevitably heightening social tensions and increasing the risk of societal breakdown," the report stated.

Also, according to the Oxfam data, the richest 1 percent of people across the globe have $110 trillion, or 65 times the total wealth of the bottom half of the planet’s population – which effectively “presents significant threat to inclusive political and economic systems.”

“It is staggering that, in the 21st century, half of the world’s population — that’s three and a half billion people — own no more than a tiny elite whose numbers could all fit comfortably on a double-decker bus,” Oxfam chief executive Winnie Byanyima told a news conference.

And the number of the rich is steadily growing: for example, in India the number of billionaires skyrocketed from six to 61 in the past 10 years, and their combined net worth is currently $250 billion.

The report comes ahead of the World Economic Forum in Davos which begins later this week, and urges the world leaders to discuss how to tackle this pressing issue.

Among the solutions presented by Oxfam are measures to avoid tax dodging and using economic wealth to pressure governments, looking for political benefits. Also, the organization calls for “making public all the investments in companies and trusts for which they are the ultimate beneficial owners,” as well as “challenging governments to use tax revenue to provide universal healthcare, education and social protection for citizens.”

Oxfam also said that there are many laws that favor the rich, which were lobbied for in a “power grab” by the world’s wealthiest people.

Since the late 1970s, tax rates for the richest have fallen in 29 out of 30 countries for which data are available, according to Oxfam.

"A survey in six countries (the US, UK, Spain, Brazil, India and South Africa) showed that a majority of people believe that laws are skewed in favor of the rich," the report said.

For instance, almost 80 percent of the Spanish and the Indians, as well as over 60 per cent of the US and the UK residents, either agree or strongly agree that “the rich have too much influence over where this country is headed.”

Neo liberal consumerism, knows no political system. The communist political system as practiced by China is at the forefront of it.The coorelation of China's rise and the gap cannot be underestimated.

What do you think is the reason for the correlation? There is no doubt that it exists.

As unpalatable and unacceptable as this situation is, I firmly believe has to be put into the context of what existed before.

The super-rich getting even richer does NOT imply that the extreme poor are getting poorer. In fact it has been quite the opposite. I have no issues with more millionaires and billionaires as long as the benefit they bring to society outweighs the harm they cause it.

As things presently stand today however the balance is shifting towards the negative, not because of the idea of capitalism but more so because of the corruption of it. Privatized profits and socialized losses is not what Adam Smith had in mind when he wrote The Wealth of Nations.

Nonetheless extreme inequality over a long period of time is not a good thing and eventually results in unexpected and unanticipated upheaval, so no doubt it needs to be dealt with. I am not sure that the increasingly super-rich Davos crowd are the ones to spearhead it.

Notice there is no difference between regardless of system. Democracy can cure some it but are we willing???

You rightly state in the "The super-rich getting even richer does NOT imply that the extreme poor are getting poorer. In fact it has been quite the opposite"

              good talk.

You ask me what I think it is ,you said it. China bailed out Wall Street ...socialized looses or socialism for the rich and they came out richer. Both economies are connected. The political governance that rules them individually takes a back seat to this marriage.... Who in dem right mind or power can mash it up.It will grow until ......mi nuh know?

Everything in life is relative.... so is whether the poorest are better or worse off... However

I believe this global construct of inequality is completely unsustainable and is headed towards a massive correction. The global bio-system i.e. the environment is being debased, polluted and exhausted as everyone strives for "American-style" development & consumption.... led by 2.5 billion Chinese & Indians
The US has 5% of the world's population and wantonly consumes >20% of the world's resources... so clearly those that strive to live as Americans or Western Europeans do will mostly fail to do so. There is just not enough physical resources to satisfy that demand

As people strive for the lifestyle of excessive consumption championed by multinational corporations and US-influenced media.. Hollywood, CNN/NBC/ABC etc plus the ubiquity of the internet... there will be increasing competition for increasingly scarce resources.... which historically results in conflict i.e. war

War will be the inevitable result of this mad pursuit of excessive consumption... that's most likely how any correction in the gross global imbalances will look

So there is no war, because of poverty and scare resources???

It is either everybody stay poor or we try and uplift everybody. Some is definitely going to get more than others for some reason or another.

Yes we have to try to have some equity but just to use "American style consumerism" as the pretext for war is not the whole story.

Man a fight over a slice of bread, Man a fight over religion, man a fight even when them a communist and suppose to share everything. Some countries are way better off following a good development model western style, others are not but it could be because of leaders or lack of it.

I can believe that. There is a good book titled Plutocrats by Chrystia Freeland which gives a good account of this phenomenon.

They are like an international club unto their own, national identities and laws exist only for the rest of us, lol.

All war is essentially about resource competition... don't confuse pretexts for war like religion or politics with the core dynamic of conflict.... land, sea, space & the resources therein

So if the masses of people worldwide are inculcated thru the media with an ideology of excessive consumption .... and resources are increasingly being depleted... logic and history dictate that war will create equilibrium out of that disequilibrium

That's how the world works when one looks beneath the surface

"All war is essentially about resource competition" or the lack of it... can't forget that.

PJ would say "more man have more cars"

So why the communist fight, is it because of the American media??? China and Japan doing well so maybe they can just drink a juice and relax then?
