Police vow to protect West Kgn residents

POLICE yesterday increased their presence and imposed a curfew in and around sections of West Kingston after frustrated residents who expressed their displeasure at the actions of gangsters said they were threatened.

Newly promoted Senior Superintendent of Police Steve McGregor, head of the Kingston Western Police Division, pointed to several walls spray-painted with messages of disgust in the troubled communities yesterday.

"We want freedum," read one message on a wall in Denham Town.

    "No more system," another read.

According to the police, the graffiti have angered gunmen who, in response, have sent threats to the residents.

"We have intelligence of men moving around with high-powered rifles in groups in these areas," said McGregor.

"I want to send out the message to them that there will come a time when there will be contact with my group, and I want Jamaica to know that we are prepared to deal with whatever they put out," said McGregor.

"The police are aware of what is going on. We are here to protect the people. They have the right to live the way that they want to and we are here to ensure that this happens," McGregor told the Jamaica Observer.

He made the comment as he led police and soldiers through sections of the volatile communities.

During the tour, residents were seen peeping from their homes, watching the movements of the police and soldiers.

Police said the messages indicated that residents were tired of the gangsters and were willing to help the police curb the criminal activities that are wreaking havoc in their communities.

Police say they will be keeping a 24-hour presence in the areas.

"A curfew has since been imposed on the wider Denham Town area of the West Kingston Division as also the entire Tivoli community," said McGregor.
