Residents urged to stop calling South St. Andrew ‘Jungle’Former Prime Minister P.J. Patterson is urging residents of South St. Andrew to shed the constituency's garrison image. Delivering the main address at the dedication and opening ceremony of the Iris Gelly Reading Room and Auditorium, Mr. Patterson said residents should also move to address the constituency by its proper name and insisted that residents cease from calling the area “Concrete Jungle”.
Mr. Patterson said that calling the area “Concrete Jungle” was a retrograde step in the efforts to improve the lives of the residents and the perception of the area to the rest of society.
And Member of Parliament for South St Andrew, Dr. Omar Davies has again vowed to put a lid on the gun violence linked to a long standing gang feud in sections of the constituency.
Speaking in the area Thursday, Dr. Davies acknowledged that the past two years had been difficult for South St. Andrew.
To thunderous applause, he said the time has come to take back the community from gunmen.
He was addressing the dedication and opening ceremony of the Iris Gelly Reading room and Auditorium.
Dr. Davies painted a picture of students not being able to sleep at nights even when the shooting stops, and that some days they are not able to learn as they are too tired due to inadequate sleep.
