We had these *agricultural experimental lots along the highway near Ferry... I wonder if that type (those types of research...) research and development is still being done in JA?
*Think the crop was soya beans (soy beans)?
Wonder if the Edamame - (What the hell is this?) - would be a good fit for us? Where is the market for it? Our soil and climatic conditions? Rainfall comparisons... etc? etc?
...better uses (for us) for our abandoned cane lands?
Very interesting post boss."Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world. Indeed, it is the only thing that ever has."

Karl, this is soybeans but apparently harvested early it has a special taste, quality and there is a big tradition in china, japan etc to use this in cooking and right now there seems to be more demand than supply.
Don't know all the details but Taiwan is converting or has converted 45 old sugar plantations to grow more of this.

Haha, watch the price plummet as supply really gets on board, only think I am not sure about is how demand will change, does it become tobacco in the hey day of consumption of that product or is it a niche market with a limited subset of the population. If the first then it will be interesting but price will still fall, in the second case the price will plummet as supply piles in.

With all the anti-smoking ads on tv and radio, are the tobacco companies losing money? No. The market price will be driven by the quality of the product. Jamaican Weed can hold the same position in the market place like Blue Mountain Coffee and fetch premium price.Hey .. look at the bright side .... at least you're not a Liverpool fan! - Lazie 2/24/10 Paul Marin -19 is one thing, 20 is a whole other matter. Another difference is that marijuana has alternative uses other than recreational that tobacco has never had, for example medicinal. Even within the recreational market you have cookies, brownies, and all kinda new products.
I do agree with Stoni that there will probably be an oversupply of the plant for a while before the market sorts itself out.
Regarding Jamaican weed, I think it is more the brand recognition that is in its favor more than the quality. More potent weed is being produced elsewhere these days, those guys are growing for a specific THC content depending on the use. However our weed has an association with our culture that others cannot duplicate.Last edited by Islandman; January 17, 2014, 08:51 PM."It is easier to build strong children than to repair broken men" - Frederick Douglass
