    Gruesome murders in Newlands

BY KARYL WALKER Editor - Crime/Court Desk walkerk@jamaicaobserver.com*
    Wednesday, January 08, 2014

WHEN residents of Washington Mews in Newlands, Portmore saw a mongrel dog dragging a bag with an object in it they grew curious and investigated. To their shock and horror the bag contained the head of 36-year-old Dane Cross, also called 'Vigilante' or 'Vigo'.

Cross was one of two men killed in the community. His friend, 26-year-old cabinet maker Franklyn Robinson, also called 'Married Man', was identified as the other victim. Robinson, the police said, was employed to Courts Jamaica Ltd.

The remainder of Cross' body was not found up to last night, despite of the best efforts of the police yesterday. Robinson's body was found in the community, but with his head intact.

3 Family Members Murdered are Buried

Flashback, women from Newlands slaughtered buried in 2000.
So many murders, so many unsolved crimes.

        ----------

        Tears flow at family funeral

        May 8, 2000

        Claude Mills, Staff Reporter

Sequel to a massacre THE MEN of the Wee Tom family, seated in the first row, kept their composure during the first hour of the funeral mass held for three female family members murdered in last month's Good Friday massacre.

However, when the caskets were moved towards the front of the church, the men clutched each other and dissolved into tears at sight of the caskets arranged side by side.

The mass was held in honour of the lives of Myrtle Evelyn Wee Tom, 69, and sisters, Cassandra Hectrine Campbell, 54, and Fredricka Wee Tom, 45.

Hundreds of people converged on the Church of Reconciliation in Bridgeport, Portmore to attend yesterday's funeral service of the three women slain on April 21, Good Friday, on March Pen Road. A total of five people died in what has come to be known as the Good Friday massacre. Residents and police believe the women were just in the wrong place at the wrong time.

The church was packed, and the overflow congregation in six tents erected outside, sheltered from bright sunshine, while others huddled under umbrellas.

Bernard Wee Tom, husband of Myrtle Wee Tom, seemed particularly dazed by the mad carnival of deadly violence that claimed his wife's life. While the choir sang How Great Thou Art, tears flowed from his downturned face onto the funeral programme he clutched with both hands. The couple would have celebrated their golden anniversary next year.

Gary Wee Tom, perhaps the hardest hit, losing his mother, Myrtle and his wife, Fredricka, made a game effort to follow the programme through the prism of his tears.

Remembrances were given for Fredricka who was often dubbed the 'Mother Theresa of Newlands' by those whose lives were touched by her selflessness and untiring generosity. Friends spoke at length of her contribution to the Christian community, and even of her lusty singing voice.

"Imagine Fredricka in the choir of angels! The altar section would definitely need some rearranging because Fredricka's voice would be well ahead of them. Sing on, my sister, sing on," Mrs. Karen Kennedy, principal of Bridgeport Comprehen-sive High School said.

Sister Mary Grace Wee Tom delivered the remembrance for Myrtle Wee Tom, her sister-in-law. Myrtle, she said, wanted to become a Catholic and had discovered a deeper level of faith and joy.

"They could not have died on a better day than Good Friday, it is the day that my mother died over 20 years ago. She (Myrtle) died with the Lord, in a way, she's found Him, and a life of perfect peace and joy," she said.

The priest who presided over the service, the Reverend Walter Dorsey, made an impassioned appeal to the congregation to "go beyond the boundaries of their homes and churches to find a way to make a difference.

"They're talking about putting more police on the roads but what we need are more soldiers of Jesus on the street who are not afraid to stand on a corner and minister to the young men out there to help them understand that someone does care for them," he said.

Tributes were also paid by Fredricka's son, Andre Wee Tom who recited the words of the R & B hit, 'One Sweet Day', Myrtle's grand-daughter Alicia Wee Tom, and by Rennant Campbell, brother of Cassandra Campbell.

The bodies were interred at Dovecot.

Very famous family from the region,Newlands and Naggo Head are death traps, too many lanes that are too narrow for police vehicles to patrol,no lights too.I remember a good friend of mine(a bodyguard of a MP)telling me he had to run for his life in one of those death trap lanes. He was so happy to come across a police officer but once he told him what was happening the officer ran for his life too.

Knew the family very well, my dad and I used to buy our weekly groceries from their shop. The shop was burnt down after the family refused to pay extortionists. Got robbed outside the shop at gun point years ago when I was a youth.

What is preventing our security forces from surprising these death lanes and their adjoining residences with a protracted raid that could last weeks if necessary, searching every nook and cranny, looking for all sorts of contraband, swabbing random hands for gun powder residue, and leaving only when they are satisfied that they have driven the fear of God into the minds of a few?

              WHAT?!?

Can't see why what that isn't done.Newlands,Baggo Head and Old Braeton(Independence City too to a lesser extent)existed way before the building boom that has redefined Portmore.I suspect those communities are facing huge obstacles regarding image and wanton neglect. This is most unfortunate given the rich history they bring to Portmore.
It is as if nobody cares.
Old Braeton had a groundbreaking football team named Hellshire Kickers(a family member of mine was the coach)and Naggo Head rose to prominence in recent past because of its football team.
They are both instrumental in playing a role in Reggae music, famous dancehall lawns and DJs.
Both were pioneer in commerce as alluded by Hortical.
The neglect is mind boggling,it has to be because of financial reasons. What is really the solution to sustain long term development require hefty financial investment.A forgotten community.

Which part of it says our security forces are prevented from doing what is required to provide a certain level of safety for the citizens?
