Look To Ganja For Revenues, Says Lobby Group

    Published: Monday December 30, 2013 | 6:33 pm0 Comments
Debbie-Ann Wright, News Editor - Radio

    KINGSTON, Jamaica:
A local lobby group is suggesting that the government look to the decriminalisation of ganja as a means of solving its revenue problems.

The National Alliance for the Legalization of Ganja says it takes note that the Government revenue is projected to fall short by some $12.4 billion for the 2013 to 2014 fiscal year.

And it also notes that new taxes are being contemplated to offset the shortfall, including the possibility of placing general consumption tax on gasolene.

However, the group is instead suggesting the government look to license and regulate the cannabis industry.

It says the industry could provide the Government with much needed revenue, provide significant income earning opportunities for Jamaican farmers, and ultimately lead to wealth creation and prosperity for the country.

The marijuana lobby group says the parliament should fast track the reform of cannabis legislation to decriminalise the smoking of marijuana then find ways to regulate and tax the industry while educating persons.

In addition the National Alliance for the Legalization of Ganja is advocating stronger and more severe penalties for the possession of compressed ganja for illegal export.

It says this would ensure legitimate opportunities for future licensed exports and stamp out illegal drug dealers.

"It therefore is useless and pointless, unless it is for share malice and victimisation to arrest and charge a 92-year-old man for such a simple offence. There is nothing morally wrong with this man smoking a spliff; the only thing wrong is that it is still on the law books," said Chevannes.
