Controversial Sting performances poisonous of Gov’t sponsorship

Arising from controversial performances at this year’s staging of the dancehall concert, Sting, ethno-musicologist Dennis Howard said the Jamaican music industry needs to develop sound professional attitudes.

Several performances at the Government-sponsored Boxing Day event have shadowed what many have labelled a generally outstanding event.

An on-stage lyrical competition between Lady Saw and Macka Diamond has received most of the criticisms.

Howard argues that in order for the events of such nature to justify receiving support from taxpayers and the private sector, they have to deliver a professional and tasteful production.

He said it’s unfortunate that with good intentions, the results are disappointing.

The Jamaica Tourist Board sponsored Sting for the first time in 30 years.

Another commenter in labelling aspects of the event a disgrace has said resignations should be expected.

Sting had a bumper crowd. All who got involved with it knew exactly what they were getting into.

It will do nothing for their career.

It wasn't even all about Say and Macks, there wasn't even a hint of displeasure crom the mc or JP.
At the end of the day,Sting has proven to be anything but a family affair.

But they have never claimed to be that.

They have built their reputation on being a major show with the most raw form of dancehall music. It is a show where artistes fight during a clash, push each other off stage, throw bottles into the crowd.

Why anybody expected anything different this year is very strange.

It is just the usual fake outrage and shock.

This is what Minister Lisa Hannah said at the Sting launch:

Whether or not you agree with the lyrics, the fact is, if you look on Youtube now, Charly Black’s and J Capri ‘Whine & Kotch’ has more than 6 million viewers. If you look on Konshens with ‘Gal A Bubble’ more than 2 million viewers. So Dancehall is going to blow up in a way that you’ve never seen before.

She said “the global telecast will have exponential benefits to the country as persons will be able to see, in real time, our culture, fashion and entertainment venues. This exposure could be transformative to the earning potential of performers and promoters and ultimately could lead to the creation of new avenues for cultural and creative revenue."
OK then, so what is the problem now? I thought we wanted the world to experience the Sting "culcha"?

Blah..blah...blah....The patrons of Sting (now in its 30th year) got exactly what they paid for. Every year it's the same old tired comments and opinions.
