Within minutes of NBC’s “The Voice” finale announcement that Jamaican singer Tessanne Chin had in fact won the popular US contest on the globally celebrated te*levision series late on Tues*day night, the hash*tag “#TeamTessanne” was trending on Twitter and seen by millions around the world.
That’s because during the hours leading up to the final episode (and even days before, in some cases), artistes, sports stars and celebrities from the Caribbean diaspora had been showing their support for the sin*ger and galvanising their fans to support her as well.
Chin’s victory comes at a time when Caribbe*an acts have been breaking into the US mainstream at a tremendous rate and seems to solidify a longstanding belief that our chain of islands serves as the breeding ground for some of the best—and most amazing—talents on the planet.
For the many local artistes who had met and interacted with the talen*ted beauty in previous years, Chin seemed destined to win it all from day one, and her contingent of Trinindad and To*bago fans were in full agreement.
Thus, the group “Tri*nidad supports Tessanne Chin on The Voice” had been formed since Aug*ust when Chin made her debut on The Voice for the blind auditions and boasts of almost 2,000 members.
The group also hosted a viewing party (à la An*ya Ayoung-Chee’s Project Runway finale) at Rust Street in St Clair for Tuesday night’s finale.
Her victory that night also resulted in an overwhelming outpouring of love, support and congra*tulations from local acts and personalities such as Anya Ayoung-Chee, Kes The Band, Bunji Garlin and even former national goalkeeper now sports correspondent Shaka Hislop.
Directors of Question Mark EntertainmentSimon Baptiste and Carolyn Pasea, who managed Tessanne for some time, also expressed their congratulations to Tessanne in an official statement to the Express.
They said: “Carolyn and I are overjoyed at Tes*sanne’s success. We’ve had the opportunity to manage her, provide guidance and assis*-
tance throughout the years and watch her grow from strength to strength.
She absolutely deserves the recognition she’s getting—and it further reinforces for us that as long as you live your life clean and put in the hard work, you will eventually be blessed with rewards!
We are still very close to Tessanne and her family, and will always be there for them. May her win fuel and inspire all those who dare to dream big—and may we all learn from her beauty, grace and composure as we continue to strive for great things.”
