Given what we now know of the role Manleys government played in its fight against aparthate
1) Jamaica refusing to condemn the Cuban intervention to keep Angola's oil fields out of apartheid's hands (Jamaica held a seat on the UN Security Council at the time)
2)It is a little known fact of history that had South Africa succeeded in seizing the Cabinda oil fields in Angola, they may have been able to resist sanctions and Mandela may well have died in prison.

3)The rebels were assisted by Cuban troops, whose planes were allowed to refuel in Jamaica.

What would you have done as P.M of Jamaica at that time , knowing full well the consequences of being in the hurricane of a cold war.
I see economist dismiss Manleys failures in the 70s as nothing more than socialism and wealth redistribution, they turn a blind eye and ear to any suggestion of a destabilisation effort by the CIA, or Manleys assertion to play an active role against Aparthate by assisting the Cubans .The sad truth of it all is the GDP after 2 terms of CIA destabalisation efforts was not bettered by a Seagas government of the 80s with a personal key to washington funds.
It amuses me that some sit here and rave about Mandela and his struggles, after living such a heroic life , while ignoring other heroes and heroines who saw the value in making him that hero for the benefit of mankinds conscience.Making him that hero had an economic and in some cases military cost where blood was shed.
Without them Mandela could have possibly been just another number paving the way for a future liberator. The mentality is of wanting to go to heaven and no one wants to die.
