Rack up US$30,000-bill on cloned credit card
BY KARYL WALKER Ediotor - Crime/Court Desk walkerk@jamaicaobserver.com

HEAD of the Jamaica Public Service Company (JPS) Kelly Tomlin has confirmed that her credit card was cloned and the fraudsters racked up a whopping US$30,000 bill.

However, Tomlin said the incident happened months ago. "It happened some time ago. They are still calculating the amount. They went on a spree," Tomlin told the Jamaica Observer.

The fraudsters went on a wild spending binge at fast food and expensive restaurants, and also spent a huge chunk gambling in casinos with their imitation of the executive's US credit card.
Credit and debit cards are cloned by fraudsters who install a copying device at automated teller machines which skims the card's electronic data and makes an exact replica.
Tomlin, an American national, said she was pleased with the way local police were handling their probe into the matter.
"They were very helpful. It was a shock. I have never been to a casino in my life, and they charged US$10,000? That should have said something," she said.
Other persons have also been victim to the fraudsters.
"I was at a party and I thought my card was the only one cloned, but some others had their cards cloned as well," she said.
"I have become very particular with the use of my card," she added.
The Organised Crime Investigative Division is currently probing a fraud ring which they believe is responsible for the theft.
However, it was not clear if anyone has been arrested in connection with the incident.
