  • Jamaica and economic growth

For decades Jamaica has desired and pined for economic growth but not attained it -- except for a brief period in the 80s when Edward Seaga was in power. Sadly, not only has it not achieved economic growth, it has also steadily declined while other nations around it have experienced increasing growth.

When Seaga took the reins in 1980 he tried to reverse this growth but didn't achieve much. The same study said: "Nevertheless, Manley's successor and conservative political opponent, Edward Seaga, was also unable to turn the economy around during his first six years in office. The economy experienced sporadic and unsustained growth in the early 1980s. GDP declined by 4.5 per cent in 1985 but rose again in 1986 by more than 2 per cent. In the mid 1980s, the Jamaican economy was about where it was in 1980 in terms of real GDP. Negative growth in the 1980s was generally attributed to the acute decline in the world bauxite market." (Sandra W Meditz and Dennis M Hanratty, editors. Caribbean Islands: A Country Study, Washington: GPO for the Library of Congress, 1987).

The joker joins the long list of jokers in attributing "economic growth" to having occurred under Seaga.

    Liars!

What are the GDP Growth Numbers for Jamaica for the years:

    1986, 1987, 1988, 1989,1990, 1992 ?

What was the Global Growth during the years 1980 - 1992 ?

What are the GDP Growth Numbers for Jamaica during unprecedented Global Growth during the 1990s into early 2000's ??

Trying to deny the success of Seagas policies during his Term and strategic positioning of the Economy to take advantage of the 90's Industrial shift might earn you the wrath of Claude Clarke...

I suggest you light a candle, sing a sankey and find your way back to the Old Folks home.. you medication has worn off again..

Rockman this man seems to think the knock-on effect of crime impacts the many and not the few

Above all is the increasing scourge of crime. A potential outside investor only has to go on the Internet and read one of the Jamaican papers to see that if he to sets up shop in Jamaica he will be putting his life and those of his workers at risk. Millions of dollars are lost to theft every year, both from workers and outsiders, and business people refuse to expand so as not to loose more to thieves.
Also, the opportunity to make millions of dollars are lost when businesses in downtown Kingston have to close early in the day due to crime. Actual dollars are lost in the high cost of security or are passed to consumers in high prices. And the city and nation suffer. Thus the cycle of suffering will never end.

Islandman,I know crime affects...but many is less than all.
Jamaica crime rate stifles local business, largely informal ones, the community entrepreneurs (the jerk chicken vendors etc)
More consequential is the BIG BIG tief dem a JPS.

Rocky... crime is an economic & social disaster for the ENTIRE country... criminality and associated corruption robs the economy of ~6% of GDP/year per World Bank studies... over 40 years that's ~US$70Billion in economic losses at current prices

Trying to minimize the problem is not wise

This outcome is primarily the result of PNP & JLP corruption, political manipulation .. i.e Divide & Rule via garrisonization...

            Fish rots from the head.
Those JLPNP tribalists responsible for Jamaica's political shitstem should be locked away where the sun dont shine...

Relax me boss,it is very costly yes but be aware of the diversionary tactics being employed, there are much BIGGER obstacles, and its inception had nothing to do with crime.

You have a tendency to show poor judgement. It was without tact that you chose to say old folks home to a mature ite and poor judgement given the dynamics of the mass murder(our largest I can recall)at the Eventide home.
To fault the PNP for education when it was the PNP made it available to the masses...

1980s education policies were a disaster... reflecting an Education Cyaan Nyam philosophy

So this is absolutely laughable in that environment:
strategic positioning of the Economy to take advantage of the 90's Industrial shift
The DayWalkin Vampiya appeared to have been positioning Jamaica for screwdriver industry and low value 807 type piecework which disappears as soon as a lower cost location is discovered

But gwaan wid yuh foolfool hero worship
