CAPE CORAL, (AP):
Florida-based Republican Henry 'Trey' Radel disclosed on Wednesday that he is taking a leave of absence from Congress and donating his salary to charity after pleading guilty to a misdemeanor charge of cocaine possession and receiving a sentence of a year's probation.
Radel made the announcement at a crowded news conference where he acknowledged that he had let down his country, his family and southwest Florida residents.
At a court hearing earlier Wednesday in Washington, Radel told a judge, "I've hit a bottom where I realise I need help" in acknowledging that he purchased 3.5 grams of cocaine from an undercover police officer.

In the meantime, his father has said that the family has had a history of addictive behaviour. Henry 'Skip' Radel said his son called him in tears after his October 29 arrest for buying cocaine in a Washington neighbourhood. The elder Radel tells The Cincinnati Enquirer (http://cin.ci/I3WHmS ) that the Republican congressman hasn't been back to his native Cincinnati in some 18 months, but calls him every week.
The elder Radel says Trey's mother Kathy had alcohol issues. He says she choked to death at her son's December 31, 2009, wedding reception in Fort Myers, Florida.
