Video: N.M. police shoot minivan full of kids after driver flees for the second time

By Iris Carreras Topics Daily Blotter
(CBS) TAOS, N.M. - A simple traffic stop turned into a wild scene with a 14-year-old rushing a state cop, a high-speed chase and another officer firing at a fleeing minivan full of kids.

Now, the driver and her son are facing charges while New Mexico State Police are investigating the officers involved, reports CBS affiliate KRQE.
Oriana Ferrell, a woman from Memphis, Tenn., was allegedly pulled over for driving at 71 mph in a 55 mph zone on October 28 on a state highway south of Taos. In the incident caught on dashboard camera, the officer reportedly instructs her to turn her vehicle off and stay put before walking back to his car. However, she drives away, setting off a chase.
According to the station, the woman had five of her children in the car, ranging in age from 6 to 18.

The trooper again pulls the woman over and yells for her to get out of the car several times before reaching into the minivan to try and pull her out.
In the dash cam video, children in the car are heard yelling for the officer to leave their mom alone and get off of her, reports the station.
At one point Ferrell's 14-year-old son gets out of the minivan and starts walking towards the officer, but when the officer draws his Taser, he gets back in the car.
Finally, Ferrell agrees to get out and talk with the officer behind the minivan. The conversation doesn't last long. When the officer tells her to turn around, Ferrell bolts back towards her minivan. The officer grabs her and a struggle ensues.
That's when her 14-year-old son gets out of the car again and rushes the officer. The boy and the cop have a short tussle. The officer draws his Taser again while the boy runs back into the minivan and closes the door.
As backup officers pull up, the officer pulls out his baton and smashes one of the rear windows as the family screams again. The minivan speeds off while another officer fires what appears to be three shots at the fleeing vehicle.
Ferrell leads State Police on a high-speed chase into Taos before giving herself up in front of a hotel.
Ferrell and her 14-year-old son were both arrested. The mother is charged with child abuse and fleeing as well as misdemeanor possession of drug paraphernalia. The Taos News reports that State Police claim they found two marijuana pipes in the minivan. Her son is charged with battery of an officer.
The officers involved in the shooting, whose names have not been released, are under investigation, according to the station.
The station reports the family is from Memphis, Tenn. and was in New Mexico on an educational trip.

Saw it on the news on Sunday, nothing gonna come out of it as far as i'm concerned. Time people realize they're living in a police state.

There was no need to chase the car with five kids or smash the windows or shoot at the car. They had her papers and a slam dunk case and she had five kids in the car. The cop who fired the shots should be fired and the one who smashed the window should be fined.
The same type of thinking that created a problem cannot be used to solve the problem.

She was stopped for doing 71mph in a 55 mph zone on the highway. Who does 55 mph on the highway?? Racism is so rampant in those southern states.

Funny how we expect and demand professional behaviour from US cops, but in Jamaica we want to get rid of INDECOM and we want our police to take the law into their own hands.

She was wrong to behave like a lunatic on the highway. With that said, the cop should not have fired his weapon towards a vehicle that was not a threat to his life. They had every right to pursue the vehicle on the road.

No, watch the video again and when she was initially pulled over by the cop she drove off.

Also, after the second incident when she was ordered out of the vehicle, she acted like a lunatic and fought the cop. Try that on the NJ Turnpike nuh?

Didn't she pull over in a hotel parking lot? Based on what happened maybe she saved her family and herself ... if they had remained on the highway the police may have killed them and claimed it was a shootout. Rushing into a parking lot, the police had to act differently. They all should be charged for endangering the welfare of a child (5 counts).

Lazie yuh missing the point. If yuh get pulled over on the highway, yuh haffi stay calm and follow the cop's instructions. By behaving like a jerk, she put her kids at risk and she deserves to be prosecuted.

The reality this is a police state and people are unwilling to admit it, they're just eager to label this people as heros. Talk about the fact that the *******s opened fire on a vehicle with 5 children inside.

The above just reinforces believe that Police Forces

world-wide each have an appreciable number of idiots!

I have interacted (my new word used to protect from certain unwanted questions) with members of the Jamaica security forces for many, many years and have always found occasions to be amazed at the number of 'thoughtless', crazy actions 'the police' engage in.

btw - Anyone ever wondered why the police could not have waited until 'daylight' to confront Claude Clarke's brother and other occupants of his surrounded house?

Could it be because that would have been a sensible thing to do?
