Arsonists target tractors in Portland

A quarry and sand-mining operator in Portland, Mark Wallen, is still in shock after two of his heavy-duty tractors were reportedly set ablaze by arsonists.
The incident took place shortly before 3 a.m. yesterday in the quiet community of Swift River in the parish.
According to the police, residents reportedly saw fire coming from the direction of the quarry and went to investigate.
The police say upon their arrival, fire personnel were busily trying to extinguish the blaze, which had already destroyed the larger tractor, damaging its cab and other interior parts.
However, the smaller unit, which was parked some distance away was only partly damaged.
Wallen, who was obviously shaken up by the loss, said he was still not clear as to who could have set his tractors on fire as he enjoyed a good relationship with persons in the community.
In the meantime, the police have theorised that a person or persons might have dumped fuel on to the heavy-duty equipment before set them afire.
The loss of the bigger unit is estimated at $2.5 million, while total damage is approximately $3.8 million.
The Portland police are investigating.
