  • Walter Rodney Riots -built by labor

DID YOU KNOW?: On Oct 15, 45 years ago, the Jamaican Gov't declared UWI Mona alumnus, Guyanese Historian,Walter Rodney persona non grata, triggering the infamous Rodney riots of '68 and a new political awareness in the region.

In 1972 he published his seminal work: How Europe Underdeveloped Africa; In 1980 he was assassinated by a car bomb in Guyana.

Tomorrow, Thu. Oct. 10, UWI (aka Intellectual Ghetto) celebrates his life and work with The Annual Walter Rodney Lecture. Details HERE:http://myspot.mona.uwi.edu/marcom/ec...0#.UlWLA1N2scY

Didn't know that, why did they do that?
I believe they did the same to Harry Belafonte. If true, then I remember the reason given as being baseless.

The regime of Hugh Shearer Jamaica's first "black" PM felt Rodney's "Black Power" agenda was a threat to it's survival

Brown Man Time is most effectively advanced by "black" Quislings

Gotta love the wonderful ironies of politricks

Rodney was actively pushing the black power movement and socialism among the poor and working class of Jamaica and powerful people were getting nervous. Shearer declared him persona non grata and he could not continue in his position at UWI.

The demonstrations started with UWI students marching but then spread throughout Kingston and became violent.

THERE IS ONLY ONE ONANDI LOWE!

"Good things come out of the garrisons" after his daughter won the 100m Gold For Jamaica.

"It therefore is useless and pointless, unless it is for share malice and victimisation to arrest and charge a 92-year-old man for such a simple offence. There is nothing morally wrong with this man smoking a spliff; the only thing wrong is that it is still on the law books," said Chevannes.
