DID YOU KNOW?: On Oct 15, 45 years ago, the Jamaican Gov't declared UWI Mona alumnus, Guyanese Historian,Walter Rodney persona non grata, triggering the infamous Rodney riots of '68 and a new political awareness in the region.

In 1972 he published his seminal work: How Europe Underdeveloped Africa; In 1980 he was assassinated by a car bomb in Guyana.

Rodney was actively pushing the black power movement and socialism among the poor and working class of Jamaica and powerful people were getting nervous. Shearer declared him persona non grata and he could not continue in his position at UWI.

The demonstrations started with UWI students marching but then spread throughout Kingston and became violent.
