Bailiffs chase politician
Alleged $1-m loan triggers pursuit

A man who unsuccessfully contested the 2011 General Election in a rural constituency on a People's National Party (PNP) ticket was held by bailiffs yesterday after a dramatic high-speed motor vehicle chase across sections of Kingston.
The man, the bailiffs said, was wanted in connection with the non-repayment of a $1-million loan that he allegedly acquired from a financial institution near to the time of the election.

The more than one-hour chase eventually ended at a police checkpoint in Arnett Gardens where the security forces have been active over the past few weeks in response to a spate of violence.
Eric Montaque, one of the bailiffs involved in the chase, told the Jamaica Observer that the man had borrowed the money in 2011 from a financial institution but failed to make repayments.
"For several months attempts were made to locate the individual, but our attempts failed," said the bailiff, who claimed that interest had pushed the loan to more than $3 million.
Montaque said at about 7:30 am yesterday, the man was seen at a garage near Torrington Bridge and an attempt was made to speak to him. However, he jumped into his car and sped off.
The bailiff said they chased the man through sections of Cross Roads, Half-Way-Tree and Constant Spring Road before they were
finally able to apprehend him on Ninth Street in Arnett Gardens.
The sound of screeching tyres on the narrow streets of the densely populated community drew scores of curious residents from their homes.
"A wha dis dem bring come inna we area? See all media come; we no involve inna nothing eno," one woman said as she looked over her fence.
The bailiffs eventually released the man, who refused to speak with the Observer as he drove away from the scene.
When the Observer contacted PNP headquarters we received conflicting information on the man's status — one was that he was
still the caretaker for the seat he contested, while the other was that he was no longer active in
the party.
Several calls to his phone number, given to the Observer by a representative at the party headquarters, went unanswered.
