  • Bread sold by the slice

The harsh economic times have forced many inner-city shopkeepers to become more creative in pricing basic food items to suit the pocket of their strapped-cash customers.
Selling a single slice of bread may not be the norm in Jamaica, however, it is in many of these areas where shopkeepers retail a slice of the product for $20.

well IN MY DAY $20 could do some people's grocery shopping ...... and could buy nuff nuff bread!! $20 a slice is news in that regard!

moreover, there was not much "slice" bread available anyway....you had to slice it yuhself when yuh reach home probably because there was no consistency in slicing.

Those were the days when $20 was the biggest denomination.

                  Bread by the slice!

Many of you may not have been born when this occurred during earlier years.

Not even sure if it ever went away as visiting 'country' became multiple short visits (say from 1965 onwards) that deep intimate interaction with 'the poorest of the poor' became more and more transient.

                        $20?
...wonder current value of that $20 dollars when compared to $1 value in say the 1969 (year our J$ was introduced)?

                        A loaf of bread?
$0.20? ...do not remember what it was then...would love to be reminded of same.
