"WildCat robot runs on flat land free of a tether

Boston Dynamics is known for making nature-inspired robots, like the cinder-block-throwing BigDog, the building-leaping SandFlea, and, of course, the faster-than-Usain Bolt Cheetah. The Cheetah has possibly gotten the most attention with its remarkable speed, but some of you were not quite impressed yet since it was still connected to a boom arm for stability and running on a treadmill instead of the ground.

Well, Boston Dynamics has released video of a new robot called WildCat, a seeming follow up to the Cheetah that is capable of running on flat land free of a boom arm or tether. The WildCat is larger than the Cheetah, but impressive in its stability and form.

Boston Dynamics says, "WildCat is a four-legged robot being developed to run fast on all types of terrain. So far WildCat has run at about 16 mph on flat terrain using bounding and galloping gaits." The robot, like others from the company, is being funded by the DARPA M3 program, and could be used one day to aid in search and rescue operations, among many other applications.

The video below is of its best performance so far, but we have a feeling we could see it breaking records soo"]WildCat robot runs on flat land free of a tether
