  • Shaggy Sold a Mere 741 copies in First Week

REGGAE albums continue to show poor sales in the lucrative North American market, according to the latest figures from Nielsen Soundscan.

The sales tracker reports that the top five albums on the Billboard Reggae Album chart returned paltry numbers, consistent with data for the last five years.
SHAGGY... had a poor first week with sales of 741 copies
SNOOP LION... moved only 899 copies in the past week
    Reggae Nosedive

Shaggy's highly touted Out of Many, One Music: Sly and Robbie Presents Shaggy, had a poor first week with sales of 741 copies to debut at number three.

It is the follow-up to 2011's Summer in Kingston, which was also a commercial flop.
This is a far cry from the mega sales Shaggy enjoyed with his Boombastic and Hot Shot albums.

And though it came in at number one, 9ine, an album by American Rhythm and Blues singers Musiq Soulchild and Syleena Johnson, sold only 955 copies.

9ine was produced by Jamaican Kemar 'Flava' McGregor.
With over 10,000 copies sold to date, Hawaiian reggae band The Green sold another 377 copies this week with its Hawaii 13.
The set, which opened at number one six weeks ago with 4,960 copies, is currently number four on the reggae table.
Selling just over 70,000 copies to date since its April 23 release, Reincarnated by American rapper Snoop Lion moved only 899 copies in the past week.

Another album that had hyped pre-release coverage, Reincarnated entered at number one on the chart with over 21,000 copies.
New York dub/reggae group 10 Foot Ganja Plant debuts at number five with its 13th studio effort Skycatcher. The album sold 304 copies.
Albums by top dancehall artistes have not done well on mainstream North American charts in recent years.
Gyptian's Hold Yuh (featuring Nicky Minaj) is the last song by a Jamaican act to make a mark on the Billboard pop chart. That happened in 2010.

Sad. Hope digital download is better.

I wonder how long they will continue to have a Reggae chart with those pathetic figures. Disco music from the 70's is probably selling more than that to rhatid.

When I saw that Jamaican feature on BET awards a few months and all the songs performed were from 15+ years ago I said this is NOT good for a contemporary music genre.

Technology has simply changed and made sure that "studio only" acts can't eat food and as such performers will continue to shine. Chronixx, Chris Martin, Tarrus Riley, Damian Marley, Beenie Man andothers are performing all over the world and getting a good response.

it s music in general. Since 2012 it has not been very good but maybe better on the digital charts.

It is simply a very good reason why so many record stores went out of business in US and Europe.

Ah well, at least we still have Usain Bolt, Yohan Blake, Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce, and young Yanique Thompson…….and oh yes, a seemingly promising young netball team.

Really, who is buying music today??? Any music???? The technology has changed the whole concept of buying music. Go to Youtube and convert the video into mp3 and you have your music for free. What I know is that dancehall is very popular amongst American youths.

Rihannas last album sold more than a million, her sixth one to do so ....Kanye sold 300,000 in the first week of his album release....Justin Timberlakes album sold over 2 million this year. Music is still selling for successful artistes.

Yes album sales are down from the glory days of the 90s but make no mistake, moving just 800 copies in the first week for an established artiste who has hit the billboard charts before is a major flop by any standard. It means there is absolutely zero mainstream interest.

Is that Album or with download too. Anyway remember in the heights of music sales those albums would be going Gold sometimes in a weak. I remember sometime the top Allbum in the the US for a week sold something like a shocking 5000 albums.

Don't know if it includes downloads or not but still. Is Shaggy we talking you nuh. If Snoop could move 20,000 its first week and The Green could do 4,000 then then you cannot explain away 800.

The high point of album sales was the NSync/Backstreet Boys/Britney era when the top artistes were regularly moving more than a million during their first week of release. Its down quite a lot from there. A top selling album in the US these days sells a few hundred thousand its first week of release.

Reggae/dancehall hasn't had a crossover hit in a while. Kartel was on the verge of doing it, it is a pity he got himself in the trouble he is in.

Maybe Chronixx can do a thing. He is versatile enough to do that kind of song that will breakthrough.

Reggae is not in the same category, not even close. Significantly less marketing, promotion & airplay. Shaggy fired his crew after his last flop, and this new album is a much bigger disaster than his prior album.

Supposedly he did the right thing by getting Mafia and Fluxie but the album was leaked online. I hear some entertainers have people checking constantly online.

Person who told me has a free copy.
