If Republicans Want To Shut Down Washington, They'll Have To Ask China's Permission First

In their never-say-die efforts to defeat Obamacare, Tea Party Republicans brought the federal government a giant step closer to shutdown last night. What they seem not to have considered is how America’s foreign creditors will react.

Although China, Japan, and other major creditor nations have no dog in the Obamacare fight, they have a strong interest in preserving America’s basic financial, economic, and social stability. From their point of view, the Tea Party contingent is not following the script and a corrective may prove necessary.

If the creditor nations were to sell just a small proportion of their American assets, they could send Wall Street into a tailspin, with unpleasant implications for many Republicans.

They are unlikely to push things that far but even if they were merely to slow the pace of their buying, bond yields would rocket and stocks could fall 15 percent in the space of a couple of weeks. A key thing here is that American asset valuations are at historic highs — the Standard & Poor’s 500 is on a P/E of 19 and long-term bonds yields are still near their lowest levels in decades.

It is sometimes suggested that by triggering a sell-off, creditor nations would be cutting their own throats. Actually this is a characteristically myopic Western way of looking at things – a view that completely misunderstands how things have changed now that East Asians call the tune. The point is that the creditor nations are long-term holders who are largely indifferent to short-term fluctuations.

As a general rule, the East Asian creditor nations hate drawing attention to themselves. But they are quite effective behind the scenes in making their views known. One of the most important ways they wield influence is through major Wall Street investment banks. These latter in turn spend large amounts on political contributions, typically backing both Republicans and Democrats.

Their money gives them plenty of face time to advise American elected representatives on “good economics,” a term that more and more these days amounts to economics that serves East Asia’s interests. Meanwhile American investors generally are short-term thinkers who rarely show much intestinal fortitude in riding out downturns.

It remains to be seen how markets will react tomorrow but the betting is that, in the absence of a climbdown by Republicans, we will see a significant correction. And if Tea Party stalwarts continue to stick by their guns in the weeks ahead, we could see damage particularly in techs and other high P/E stocks. For the record, major tech stocks that seem most richly valued on a forward P/E basis include CRM, LNKD, CCI, FB, and ADBE. Although future prospects may justify such valuations, the short-term action could be quite bumpy — certainly bumpy enough to frighten a lot of the Republican rank and file.

    Who Owns the National Debt

Meanwhile, foreign entities own 34.2% of all U.S. government-issued debt, with the following nations' individuals and institutions representing the five biggest holders of that debt, again ranked from low to high:
    • United Kingdom: 0.9%
    • Brazil: 1.6%
    • "Oil Exporters", which includes Ecuador, Venezuela, Indonesia, Bahrain, Iran, Iraq, Kuwait,Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Algeria, Gabon, Libya, Nigeria and the United Arab Emirates: 1.7%
    • Japan: 7.0%
    • China (including Hong Kong): 8.1%
All other nations hold approximately 15% of the U.S. outstanding national debt.

I hope the Dems stand thier ground even if it means a shutdown for a few days. If you give in to anything with these people, even a delay of Obamacare, then it is just a setup to do this again later.

Time to call some bluffs and get this thing over with.

this will not go well for the republicans they are still VERY much out of tune with what they need to do to get the demographics that they are after if they want to have a chance of reclaiming the whitehouse ..

The thing is though, the core of the group holding the government hostage are not as concerned with winning the White House as one may think. Their congressional districts have been redrawn heavily in their favor over the last few years so they know they are not at risk by catering to the extreme right. Indeed those are the people that elected them.

For Republicans concerned about national success though, the Karl Roves of the world, they are very concerned about what their party has become. But it is them who created the monster and now it is fully grown!

true, but as you say....it is at the end of the day it is a republican problem.

i remember when the tea party people were in their ackee and helped the rupblicans to a good showing during the mid term election after obama's first term, i said then, that that was a blessing in disguise for obama because those fringe righters had NO headspace! they had no solutions and would be found out in short order ... so here it is ...... how will shutting down the government benefit their constituencies?

It certainly won't but the same fringe constituents say them not buying healthcare coverage even if it is affordable and them nuh have none, so I do not underestimate their tendency to support actions that are harmful to themselves if it makes them feel like they are giving Obama the finger.

You saw this ad? Sponsored by the billionaire Koch brothers who don't have to worry about healthcare costs, encouraging regular people not to sign up for Obamacare. Ah bwoy.

Cannot understand why the democrats are not campaigning locally right now?
Ready fi put on mi button and go door to door!!!!

Should be hammering in home to GOP looser-fool positions and reinforcing benefits of ObamaCare!!!

Just imagine the discussion on still enjoying your private health care insurance and care, still enjoying your employer benefits coverage...etc., etc?

...and then there are the many tangible benefits ObamaCare has you now enjoying?

...and even in those Red States and Red Districts...the door-to-door campaign should be in full swing!!!! Get those voters to think on why the 'rich politician' would deny them the assistance to a more secure healthcare future...assistance to you, family, friends, acquaintances and fellow GOPers???!!!! Why?

The writer is confusing the govt shutdown issue with raising the debt ceiling , which is due in a few weeks.

Foreign creditors nuh too business with some parks and govt services being shutdown, but when is time fe collect dem money, now that is pon a different level.

No, not unrelated. Whoever wins this fight will most likely win that fight as well.

But the financial markets are reasonably stable today. They would not be on the day after the US defaults on its debt.
