KINGSTON, Jamaica -- Member of Parliament for East Central St James and Opposition Spokesman on Tourism Edmund Bartlett, has joined the list of Jamaica Labour Party (JLP) front liners publicly endorsing Audley Shaw’s challenge for leadership of the party.
“Audley Shaw offers the best chance at this time to quickly rebuild the JLP, motivate and inspire its supporters and put the party on a pathway to victory,” Bartlett said Sunday in a formal announcement of his position.
Shaw will go up against party leader Andrew Holness for the JLP top spot in an election scheduled for November.
“Audley Shaw’s life experiences have sufficiently prepared him for leadership and there is no doubt that his extraordinary skills shown while serving as Finance Minister, in navigating the bad economy inherited from the PNP and the subsequent global economic crisis, are testament to his amazing leadership ability to work well in a time of great crisis. This is a time of crisis and the JLP and Jamaica needs him now,” Bartlett declared.
Bartlett, a former JLP Deputy Leader, General Secretary and Deputy General Secretary, said that he recruited Holness to the party in the early 1990s, and added that “whilst Holness would make a great Prime Minister in the future, we must at this time do what it right for the JLP and Jamaica by electing Shaw as leader of the JLP”.
