Ahead of today's public session of the People's National Party (PNP) annual conference at the National Arena, General Secretary Peter Bunting has said that the party's membership has almost doubled in recent times. Bunting expects a huge crowd today.
"Our party membership almost doubled from just under 26,000 to just under 51,000 as we speak," Bunting told reporters at a news conference held yesterday, following the closed session of the conference at Jamaica College.
"We also had a dramatic increase in the number of constituencies that have become recognised constituencies,' Bunting said. "And by recognised we mean that the level of the political organisation in the constituency is at a point where it is, among other things, deemed able to select its own candidate for parliamentary election.
"That increased from less than 30 to 37 as of July, and it looks like about 55 of the 63 or almost 90 per cent of the constituencies would have achieved that by the end of the year," Bunting said.
The general secretary noted that the party also continues to enjoy a balanced financial condition.
"We are able to raise money from various sources to meet our events and obligations," Bunting said.
"And for the fourth consecutive year, we are able to present our audited financial statements to conference and these, as usual, will be published in the week following the conference. Anywhere from Monday onwards we will be making those statements publicly available," he said.
Bunting said while mention was made of former state minister for transport, works and housing, Richard Azan's letter of resignation following allegations of improper conduct, the matter was not discussed.
"During the course of the afternoon we read comrade Azan's letter and we also read the prime minister's statement in response and there really has not been a debate around it or a discussion," he said.
Prime Minister Portia Simpson Miller will deliver the main address this afternoon.
