Controversial Transshipment Hub On Goat Islands May Go Ahead - Portia

People's National Party (PNP) president and prime minister, Portia Simpson Miller, has given the clearest indication yet that the controversial proposal to develop a transshipment hub on the Goat Islands, off Jamaica's south coast, may go ahead despite vigorous opposition from various interest groups.
In defending what may be a vital development for the government, Simpson Miller says the logistics hub will attract mega investors and will provide vast opportunities for medium, small and micro enterprises.
Addressing PNP supporters gathered at the National Arena in St Andrew this afternoon, Simpson Miller outlined the various infrastuctural projects that are to take place to position Jamaica as the globe's fourth logistics hub in time for the 2015 completion of the Panama Canal expansion.
Among the initiatives were the completion of the island's highway network, on which several billion dollars have already been spent, and further development of the island's sea and air ports.
The Chinese have indicated an interest in developing the Goat Islands off the St Catherine coast, but environmentalists and other civil society groups have been vigorously opposing the move, arguing that infrastructural development of the islands could endanger protected flora and fauna.
