Samuda Walks - TVJ Chairman Quits In Wake Of Tape-Seizure Fiasco
    Published: Saturday | September 14, 2013 6 Comments

IN THE wake of recent controversy over the confiscation of tapes belonging to journalists during an interview with embattled MVP athletes Asafa Powell and Sherone Simpson, chairman of Television Jamaica (TVJ), Milton Samuda, has resigned.

In a statement issued yesterday by TVJ's parent company, RJR Communications Group, Samuda's resignation is said to have followed the completion of investigations into the issues stemming from the involvement of one of its reporters in an interview arranged with top athletes, Asafa Powell and Sherone Simpson.

The release stated that following a probe, "There were corporate governance issues and policy breaches which the chairman of TVJ accepts."

In July, Samuda reportedly sat in on the interview of his clients, Powell and Simpson, after they were tested positive for banned substances.

Samuda allegedly asked the journalists who conducted the interviews with his clients to hand over their tapes and sections of these tapes were later edited.

The attorney's action was questioned by the Press Association of Jamaica which argued that he had no right to seize the journalists' tapes.

Following the saga, Samuda had taken a leave of absence from the TVJ board.

Samuda served on the Radio Jamaica board for 17 years and was chairman of TVJ for 13 years.

In the meantime, the RJR release said the journalist from that group who attended the interview, has since apologised and accepted disciplinary action for agreeing to the preconditions of the interview and departing from them.
