Transport and Works Minister Dr. Omar Davies has weighed into the public debate over plans to use the Goat Islands as a Logistics Hub for Jamaica. Minister Davies was speaking in St. Mary yesterday and stated “Now there is a debate which is seeking to occur, and I deliberately say seeking to occur, in that this administration has no less interest in protecting the environment than any other particular group, or any party that is an important aspect ----, but I would like to throw something in the debate, just a thought the greatest enemy to the environment is abject poverty, the greatest enemy to the preservation to the environment is abject poverty, that’s when people start bunning down forest to make charcoal they do all sort of things there and unless we can begin to systematically provide for the unemployed, opportunities for gainful employment then the continued degradation of the environment is given”.
