    Panday: PNM opponents will starve

    .

United National Congress (UNC) political leader Basdeo Panday says the government's plan to import food from other Caricom countries could lead to the starvation of those who do not support the ruling party.

Panday expressed his concerns about Government's plan in his first public address since being fully reinstated as the UNC political leader on Sunday.

"You know what frighten me about that proposal that Government is going to be the one to import food. Can you imagine what would happen to the opponents of the PNM if they were allowed to import the bulk of the food that the country consumes. They would starve people like me and you to death," Panday said.

He did so while delivering the feature address as the UNC Talk Back forum on Monday night held in Aranjuez in an open area across from the party's St Joseph constituency office.

The event also marked the 19th anniversary of the UNC.

Last Thursday, Legal and Consumer Affairs Minister Christine Kangaloo announced the Government's plan as part of an overall strategy to lower food prices.

Kangaloo said Barbados, Belize, Dominica, Jamaica, St Vincent and the Grenadines and Suriname have already expressed interest in exporting their food products to Trinidad and Tobago.
