  • Prime Minister to make her Budget Presentation

The spotlight will be on Gordon House Tuesday afternoon when Prime Minister Portia Simpson-Miller makes her much anticipated contribution to the 2007/2008 Budget Debate.

Political analysts say Mrs. Simpson - Miller's Budget presentation, her second since becoming Prime Minister, will be a crucial one.

With Jamaicans preparing to go to the polls in a few months it is expected that the Prime Minister will be making several announcements.

Speculation is rife that Mrs. Simpson-Miller will among other things announce an increase in National Housing Trust (NHT) loan benefits.

Information Minister Buchanan says the Prime Minister will also focus on poverty alleviation measures.

“She will be speaking to issues that have to do with the development of Jamaica. She will be speaking to the programme for the advancement of those persons who are disadvantaged and dispossessed in our society. She will also be looking at how we can ensure that we become more united as a country,” said Mr. Buchanan.

Meanwhile, Political Analyst Kevin O'brien-Chang says Mrs. Simpson-Miller will be keenly observed on how she delivers her Budget Presentation.

Mr. Obrien-Chang says the Prime Minister has an opportunity to rebound from the unflattering comments which followed her first Budget Presentation.

“Last year in the budget speech she certainly did not give off that aura. At her PNP conference speech she did give a much better presentation so people are looking to see if she will look like a Prime Minister. Will she appear ministerial? Or will it come back to people saying that she cannot manage and I think a lot of people will be focusing on that,” said Mr. O’brien-Chang.

“As to the specifics it is very difficult to say. It will be foolish for one to predict when one is not in the inner circle. So I would say that whatever goodies she has, how she presents it would probably be just as important as what she presents,” he continued.

RJR 94 FM will have a live broadcast of the Prime Minister's presentation.
