Huge Chinese Investment Coming For Seaport

The Government last night announced that it was in negotiations with a major Chinese corporation that wants to invest US$1.5 billion in Jamaica.
Works Minister Dr Omar Davies told The Gleaner the project involves major expansion to existing facilities at the island's main seaport.
"That investment will change the employment picture across the entire Kingston Metropolitan Region," said Davies as he addressed a Southeast St Andrew constituency conference at The Mico University College in Kingston.
Davies said he could not divulge too much information about the negotiations which he is spearheading, but promised that "there will be an announcement in months".
He, however, revealed that the Chinese company was seeking to make Jamaica its central location for the western hemisphere.
Davies said this project would provide major opportunities for investment across several sectors, particularly the information technology sector.
"The range of possibilities is mind-blowing," he said in reference to the scope of the project.
Davies said Jamaica was chosen because of its location and "because they have found that Jamaican workers are easy to train".
