Huge Chinese Investment Coming For Seaport
    Published: Monday | August 12, 2013

The Government last night announced that it was in negotiations with a major Chinese corporation that wants to invest US$1.5 billion in Jamaica.

Works Minister Dr Omar Davies told The Gleaner the project involves major expansion to existing facilities at the island's main seaport.

"That investment will change the employment picture across the entire Kingston Metropolitan Region," said Davies as he addressed a Southeast St Andrew constituency conference at The Mico University College in Kingston.

Davies said he could not divulge too much information about the negotiations which he is spearheading, but promised that "there will be an announcement in months".

He, however, revealed that the Chinese company was seeking to make Jamaica its central location for the western hemisphere.

Davies said this project would provide major opportunities for investment across several sectors, particularly the information technology sector.

"The range of possibilities is mind-blowing," he said in reference to the scope of the project.

Davies said Jamaica was chosen because of its location and "because they have found that Jamaican workers are easy to train".

Back in 2005, they were offering US10B!!!!

So in the words of wroing Jungle, this is chicken feed!

In truth, I hear this is just their participation in Kgn Harbour, but the Dutch a get debunkering at Cow Bay St Thomas and the Chinese want their own new, virgin port, and dem seh Port Esquivel too small!

Combined with rare earth mineral mining, if the termites move fast and decisively, they may well survive the next election, depite how weak dem look in the last local by-election last week.

I never thought I would say this, but THANK GOD for the IMF.

No X, not for the likkle monies dem dole out to us, but rather for the conditionalities imposed. No longer will they allow party largess, dicretionary duty waivers, run wid it campaign spending and kickback priced iPads doled out for free. Dem lock up the budget tight tight and ficsal discipline is now the ONLY avanue to pursue.

Now the 'tician dem will have to move quickly to leggo the mega investment deals without holding them hostage to kickbacks and 10% off the top. LoL

Enterprise haffi get free and reform haffi get done fast or dawg nyam certain people supper come next election cycle. The gladbag buss and is now only real works aggo get acknowledged. Less scope fi buy vote now, yuh haffi earn it!

I hope this is not another 'pipeline' announcement. These things should not be talked about until the agreement is signed. Just makes a weak negotiating hand weaker.

Politicians cannot help themselves....they feed off making big announcements and will do so when given the slightest opportunity.

That investment will change the employment picture across the entire Kingston Metropolitan Region.
