China’s Minister of Commerce issues security alert for Jamaica

    7:07 am, Wed July 17, 2013

A reported increase in criminal attacks on members of the Chinese community in Jamaica has led China's Ministry of Commerce to issue a warning to citizens doing business in the island. According to a report in Tuesday’s issue of the South China Morning Post newspaper, the security situation in Jamaica prompted the Ministry to warn Chinese business owners and visitors to stay alert. They have also been advised to travel in groups and avoid carrying large amounts of cash.

The “Jamaica safety reminder,” published on the Ministry’s website last month, followed media reports and first person accounts of robberies and attacks against Chinese nationals.

The South China Morning Post quoted from the Sunday Observer newspaper report that, in addition to being attacked by criminals, many Chinese businessmen in Jamaica have been frequent victims of police extortion.

When contacted Tuesday night, Anthony Hylton, Minister of Industry, Investment and Commerce, said he had not seen the newspaper report and therefore could not comment on the warning issued by China.
