And yet there are some who vociferously claim that Jamaica is not approaching the status of a failed state.

Yes, our institutions (courts, law enforcement apparatus, legislature, etc.) are intact, but how much difference are they making in civil society? Murderers, poachers, armed robbers, thieves, rapists, etc. carry out their mandate at will, with seemingly no obstacle in their part.

In fact, a cursory glance at the front pages of our newspapers in any seven-day period of any year will provide some clues. Really, can we get much lower?
