Marc Rich, Glencore founder pardoned by Clinton, dies

Marc Rich, the trader controversially pardoned by former President Bill Clinton, has died in Switzerland.

He was wanted by the US for tax evasion when he was pardoned on Mr Clinton's last day in office in 2001.

Mr Rich was one of the most successful traders of all time. He founded - and subsequently sold - the company renamed as Glencore in the 1990s.

He died of a stroke in the Swiss city of Lucern at the age of 78, the March Rich Group said in a statement.

Mr Rich was born in Belgium in 1934, but his family, which was Jewish, left Europe for the US in 1941 to flee Nazism.

He founded his trading company in 1974 and became known as the "king of commodities".

But in the 1980s he was accused of tax evasion, fraud, as well as illegal trade with Iran and fled to Switzerland.

Mr Rich remained on the FBI's Most Wanted List for almost two decades, narrowly escaping capture in Finland, Germany, Britain and Jamaica,

The pardon, issued by Mr Clinton on 20 January 2001, was one of more than 200 granted on his final day in the White House.

It came after Mr Rich's ex-wife had donated money to Mr Clinton's presidential library.

Mr Clinton later said he regretted the pardon, but strongly denied that gifts had any effect on his decision.

...bet there was a time when each of us believed that corruption in the USA was not as wide-spread as in Jamaica?

...and know we all know it at levels greater than that occurring in Jamaica....however, it is more insidious and often done in much more sophisticated manner. ...from the how of money filters through 'pork-barrel politics' e.g. earmarks...through retired politicians earning rewards at end of terms - posh jobs, using influence to 'get deals done', shaping of bills and laws to benefit personal and association's interests...etc., etc.

Hey he who has the 'gold' (the clout) writes the 'golden rule'.=the powerful USA winks and nods at corruption at home but screams at 'corruption abroad' as it sees fit to derive benefit for 'home'=the good ole USA or the particular interested individual or group, corporate entity or conglomerates...

...difference is that some people go to JAIL here. In Jamaica, business man and politicians do not see the jail cell; that is reserved for poor people and and those demed to be "dutty" people.

Surprised no one mentioned his implication in shady deals with a past Jamaican government.

Not only past. I think he is still a part owner in the Russian company. He has done many deals and is still a share holder in Jamaican bauxite through his Glencore.

A look at four of the local operations which have experienced ownership changes will illustrate the point.
First, the Kirkvine and Ewarton operations: These were wholly owned by Alcan from 1952 (Kirkvine) and 1959 (Ewarton), respectively, until 1978, when the Government took a small seven per cent stake. This continued until 2001, when Alcan sold its interest to Glencore International AG, which (with its predecessor Marc Rich) had been involved in Jamaica as a trader in alumina since the late 1970s.
But this ownership by Glencore was to be short-lived, as in 2007, it merged its alumina and aluminium assets with those of the giant Russian aluminium company RUSAL, and a smaller Russian aluminium company, SUAL, to form UC RUSAL (comprising RUSAL, 68 per cent; SUAL, 20 per cent and Glencore, 12 per cent; and UC RUSAL in turn became the 93 per cent owner of these operations. In consequence, the metropole for the Ewarton and Kirkvine operations has moved from Montreal, Canada (1952-2001), to Zug, Switzerland (2001-2007), and now, since 2007, to Moscow, Russia.
