      You owe HL an apology

      It’s QUITE difficult to confuse HL with Hortical for a number of reasons, including:
      (a) “Hortical” is an eight-letter word while “HL” has only two letters;
      (b) “HL” has no vowel while “Hortical” has three vowels;
      (c) “HL” is all caps while “Hortical” is written in the normal cap and lowercase style.

      By the way, are those photos all of pre-1962 (that is, pre-independence) Jamaica? There’s not much there that suggests that those are 21st-century photos. But they are nevertheless enjoyable for nostalgic purposes and, for the cynic, reminiscing on what could have been.

        Maybe the apology should be to Hortical?? as it was his post. But, I will take your advice and go one further and apologise to BOTH gentlemen. No offense was intended. So my humble apologies and thanks Historian for making me aware that old age really setting in no I will and embrace the age I am.

        Did you look at all the photos? I thought the majority were quite recent... there were some old photos but I believe this album is a compilation of photos taken in the last two to three years.

            Thanks for your sense of humor, Peter R. I’ve always admired that.

            Make no mistake, these are very beautiful photos. I’ve looked at them again and genuinely feel nostalgic. It’s no surprise that the great Italian admiral and navigator and Jamaica’s first tourist, Christopher Columbus, described Jamaica as the most beautiful of the islands that he had come across.

            However, my “pre-independence” comment still stands, as aside from the shiny leased Air Jamaica plane (which, ironically is now a part of our vanished history, just like the JOS buses), I see nothing that characterizes social and economic development after over 50 years of independence. On the other hand, I should not gripe as aside from Highway 2000, the Donald Sangster Airport and a few other examples, not much has taken place in the form of infrastructural, economic, social or political development since the heady years of Bustamante and Shearer!

            I stand corrected if I am wrong.

                  I think I misunderstood your original comment. I agree with the lack of development observation. I didn't look at the photos in that light at all but merely for their aesthetic appeal.

                  As I said to HL... yes, I'm sure it was HL, the nature and wildlife photos appeal to me. The way we humans are living is putting greater strain on the survival of many of our animal friends... I saw where someone remarked about the cutting of trees for coal in JA. Have you flown over Haiti? Let's hope the powers that be can step in to stop some of this madness.

                    I am sure you have heard me talk about our Cockpit Country ad nauseam!

                    It is being deforested--to the degree that matches 'aiti.

                    Haiti is devastated during heavy rains--because of lack of natural protection.

                    A mud or land slide is imminent in these lovely Jamaican mountains.

                    Apart from the aesthetics of the picture, what's your take on infrastructural development over the past 30 years.

                    Thanks.
