Temporary bridge between Portland and St. Mary collapsesVehicular traffic between Portland and St. Mary has come to a halt as a temporary bridge at Dover in St. Mary has collapsed. It is understood that the temporary structure was put in place by PIHL Construction Company, which is carrying out work on segment three of the North Coast Highway Project.
However the bridge collapsed Wednesday morning as a result of flooding associated with torrential rain which has been lashing sections of Portland and St. Mary since Tuesday.
“They have taken out the bridge and put up a Bailey Bridge to erect a larger bridge. Last night into this morning torrential rain has washed away the Bailey bridge and as we speak we are having torrential rains here in Annotto Bay and over sections of Portland,” said Mr. Douglas.
“So now there is no vehicular traffic not even pedestrians can cross. If you are in St. Mary and want to go to Buff Bay you have to return to Kingston or go to St. Thomas, Morant Bay, Port Antonio,”
He says efforts are being made to erect another bridge before the end of the day.
“I have been advised because I have just left the site that they are trying to build back a bridge for one lane traffic in about six to eight hours but I still doubt that will happen because we are having torrential rain althouth they are working with all the equipment in the rain,” he continued.
