'Teacher's entitlements to go through temporary period of re-organisation'

Sandrea Falconer – File
Minister with responsibility for Information, Senator Sandrea Falconer says she’s not aware that Cabinet discussed the suspension of paid study leave for teachers before a Parliamentary announcement from the education minister.
The Minister says there will be no suspension of the paid study leave, contrary to Ronald Thwaites’ announcement on May 15.
Thwaites' announcement that the benefit would be suspended along with changes to other leave entitlements has resulted in a stand-off between the Jamaica Teachers’ Associations (JTA).
Speaking at this morning’s post-Cabinet press briefing, Senator Falconer said rather than a suspension, the entitlements and privileges enjoyed by teachers will be going through a temporary period of re-organisation.
However, she could not say whether Thwaites’ Parliamentary announcement was sanctioned by Cabinet.
The JTA has suspended monthly meetings with the education minister and has questioned Mr. Thwaites’ authority to speak on entitlements arguing that any change would impact the wage freeze agreement signed in March.
However, Minister with responsibility for the Public Service, Horace Dalley has said the wage freeze agreement, critical to Jamaica’s IMF programme, remains in effect.
Senator Falconer says time should be allowed for private discussions between the disputing parties to bring about a resolution to the dispute.
