Carl Gilchrist, Gleaner WriterGeneral manager at Sunset Beach Resort, Spa and Water Park, Evatt Bloomfield, was on Saturday named Hotelier of the Year by the Jamaica Hotel and Tourist Association (JHTA) during its 52nd anniversary awards luncheon at Sunset Jamaica Grande in OchoRios, St Ann.
Bloomfield headed a list of 14 recipients to be awarded by the JHTA for excellent service to the industry over the past year.
Bloomfield, a near 40-year veteran of the tourism industry has been general manager at Sunset Beach since 2003, and was awarded for excellence in performance and achievement as a hotelier.
For the then young Cornwall College graduate, 1973 marked a turning point in his life when a friend encouraged him to apply for a job at a new hotel being built in Trelawny.
He did the training but did not get that particular job. However, he was turned on by tourism and decided to make a career out of it.
His first job was at Playboy Club Hotel before moving to Sheraton Hotel as front-desk manager at age 21.
He held other positions at other hotels before landing at Sunset Beach in 2003. Since being there, the hotel has been transformed, with the addition of a water park and renovation of rooms and public spaces on the property. The hotel has enjoyed impressive occupancy levels under his watch.
The hotel has also won several awards, including the MLT Vacation Quality Award and the Thomas Cook Canada Award of Excellence and Outstanding Award on their Family First Programme. Sunset Beach was listed at number six on Trip Advisor's list of top 10 Latin America and Caribbean Hotels and the top family-friendly destination on the site's Travellers Choice award.
