Government advances plan to increase number of constituencies
The Government is pushing ahead with the plan to provide for an increase in the number of constituencies in the island.
A Bill to increase the maximum number of constituencies from 60 to 65 was tabled in the House of Representatives on Wednesday.
It is expected that the Bill, which will amend Section 49 of the Constitution, will quickly be passed by both Houses.
However it is unlikely that an increase in seats will be in place in time for the next General Election.
The move could shift the number of seats in parliament to an odd number and help prevent a tied Lower House.
It will be left to the electoral officials to look at the number of voters registered in each constituency to determine the ones which exceed the upper limit.
This will be used as the guideline to decide which seats are to be cut and where new constituencies need to be created.
